Dec. 28th, 2016 @ 11:32 pm Defence Professors at Hogwarts, a statistical summary
Tags: ,
I was musing over the people who taught Defence Against Dark Arts in the Harry Potter books. I counted something like:

In six out of seven years, there was a defence professor who was evil.

In seven years, depending how you count, nine different people teach dark arts (counting Harry, and Moody). Out of all of them, only Lupin would be legal to employ as a teacher for more than about half a day, by any reasonable standard.

In three years, the defence professor was evil, but working opposed to Voldemort, and in three years, they were evil, and working for Voldemort.

In two years, students were taught DADA by a teacher who actually had Voldemort inside their head.

Quotes

From HPMOR, "Such as the Defense Professor. I suppose I must agree that he is a suspect. It was the Defense Professor last year, after all; and the year before that, and the year before that."

And also: "What do you want me to do about it, Mad-Eye?" Professor McGonagall was demanding. "I can't -"

"You can," the scarred man said, glaring at her fiercely. "Just fire the bloody Defense Professor."

"You say that every year," said Professor McGonagall.

"Yes, and I'm always right!"

Summation

In general, much credit to the authors of the original books, and many fanfiction works, and spin off works, where the defence professor is guilty as sin and usually Actually Voldemort, and yet, somehow, they generate some plausible doubt about it until the very end
